Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting products of unknown origin.

Some experts stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

A representative for the messaging service said it regularly monitored harmful material on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“People are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in demand to current price rises for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are using online platforms. But fake treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has already encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
