Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
