Alarming Recording Captures Instant Officers Are Stabbed in Unexpected Assault
One ranking policeman who rushed to the help of a fellow officer that got attacked by a knifeman has been awarded the Royal Recognition for Bravery.
Sergeant Tim Ansell grappled with 27-year-old Jacob Brown following he pressed a blade to the neck of his fellow officer Sgt Marc Foster.
Brown initiated the assault as the officers and their third officer, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were talking to a motorist subsequent to a traffic accident in Whalley Range in July 2023.
Brown stabbed and slashed the two Sgt Ansell and Sergeant Foster prior to PC Wolstencroft stopped him with a Taser.
"Policeman knifed," PC Wolstencroft was heard to say over his radio.
Bodyworn and dashcam footage shared by the force depicted Brown, wearing in dark clothing with a hood covering head, run up to Sgt Foster from behind with a knife outstretched.
He struck the officer who tripped and fell to the street, before Sergeant Ansell jumped in and struggled to restrain him to the floor despite being repeatedly struck with the blade.
Police Constable Wolstencroft pulled his stun gun and sought a safe opportunity, ending the confrontation to an finish.
Sgt Ansell was heard stating: "Please provide help on my neck now, I got knifed in the throat."
Sgt Ansell received multiple deep cuts to his throat and additional injuries to his arms and torso, while Sgt Foster experienced knife wounds.
Officials reported Sergeant Foster employed his hands to stop his fellow officer's bleeding before emergency responders arrived.
The new honor follows after the three officers won internal Courage Honors in October 2023 and the John Egerton Bravery Award from the area officer association in early 2024.
They were also awarded a Area Bravery Award in summer 2024.
"The efforts of each policeman in the end rescued themselves and meant no civilians endured any wounds."
Brown was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order in April 2024, per officials.
